How to Become a Member

Below is an overview of how to become a member of Widener Law Review.  Please see our Membership FAQ, which answers many questions you may have about becoming a member. 

There are two ways to gain membership to Widener Law Review:

(1) Grading On and
(2)
Writing On through 2 separate competitions:
        a.  through Summer Writing Competition (1 L’s)

        b.  through Superior Authorship Competition (2 L’s)

Grading On

The Widener Law Review offers membership by invitation to students in the top 5% of cumulative grade point average in their respective sections. Offers are extended by invitation letter, after the Spring semester to: * First-year RD students based on their 1st semester grades.
* ED students based on grades from their first 3 semesters.
* Mid-year admission students based on grades in their first 2 semesters plus summer courses.
Students receiving offers in accordance with this procedure are required to accept or reject such offers by the due date in the invitation letter received. These offers are not conditioned upon subsequent completion of a paper as a prerequisite to admission.

Writing On – Summer Writing Competition

Eligibility:

To compete in the Summer Writing Competition you must have:
   (1)   a 2.7 GPA or greater by the end of the spring semester prior to the competition;
   (2)  completed your second semester of 1RD or 2ED in the spring semester prior to the competition;

Transfer students:  1ED candidates who are transferring to the Regular Division AND will complete at least 27 credit hours by the end of the summer (contingent on acceptance into the Regular Division program and 2.7 GPA.) are eligible to participate.

Ineligibility:

Those who fall into either of the following categories are INELIGIBLE to participate in the summer writing competition:
(1) Candidates who are not completing their second semester of 1RD or 2ED in the spring prior to the competition, OR
(2) Candidates whose GPA is below a 2.7 by the end of the spring semester prior to the competition.

Writing On – Superior Authorship Competition 

Eligibility: 

The Superior Authorship Competition is open to all students who:
     (1)  Have a  cumulative GPA is 2.7 or greater; AND
     (2)  Are completing their 2nd semester of 2RD or 3ED in the spring prior to the competition.

Ineligibility:

Those who fall into either of the following categories are INELIGIBLE to participate in the summer writing competition:
     (1) Candidates who are not completing their second semester of 2RD or 3ED in the spring of 2008, OR
     (2) Candidates whose cumulative GPA is below a 2.7 after the spring semester of 2008.

Topic Selection:

Eligible candidates who wish to be considered for membership on Widener Law Review must select a topic and have it approved by the Internal Managing Editor, by April 15, 2008.*  The topic must be original (seminar and/or symposium topics will be accepted but still need to be submitted for approval) and each candidate must do his or her own research. The paper will be due at the end of June and must be at least thirty (30) full pages.*Submitting a topic for approval DOES NOT obligate you to complete and hand in a paper.

Guidelines:

Actual due dates and paper guidelines will be disseminated to each competition participant at the beginning of the summer. Only those individuals who have had their topics approved by deadline date will receive the competition details. Those who miss the topic deadline date WILL NOT be permitted to turn in a paper.
